Baggage HandlingData Analytics & AI PlatformsPassenger Experience
SITA is the industry-owned technology company behind much of the check-in, baggage and border systems at the world's airports. Its AI work runs from baggage tracking and biometrics to fuel-saving flight optimisation.
Founded in 1949 and based in Geneva, with about 4,900 staff, it says it serves more than 2,800 customers. Its products include Smart Path biometrics, Bag Journey, WorldTracer and Bag Manager for baggage, an airport operations system and digital twin, and OptiFlight, whose OptiClimb module tailors each climb to save fuel. SITA iTAM, an AI total airport management concept, is in co-development.
Doha Hamad (DOH) runs more than 700 biometric touchpoints on its system, and Miami (MIA) has 12 Smart Path pods in a Customs and Border Protection programme. ITA Airways targets 7,100 tonnes of fuel savings with OptiFlight across 2025 and 2026. Abu Dhabi (AUH) has a memorandum for iTAM, and Kaohsiung (KHH) has contracted its airport management system.

SITA border-control gates and Smart Path biometrics at Punta Cana
In November 2018 SITA completed automated border-control gates at Punta Cana, Passenger Terminal Today reported on 15 November 2018.
The Terminal B expansion added Smart Path biometrics for agent-less check-in, according to Grupo Puntacana and DR1, which reported it on 16 April 2024.
SITA worked with Hamad International Airport and Qatar Airways on Fast Pass, a facial-recognition service introduced in July 2026. The programme covers more than 700 passenger touchpoints, with initial eligibility restricted to adult passengers departing Doha. This describes the announced scope and eligibility, rather than a measured improvement in passenger processing.
Abu Dhabi Airports signed a memorandum of understanding with SITA to co-develop iTAM, an AI-driven Intelligent Total Airport Management platform, SITA said on 25 November 2025.
Geneva Airport has introduced SITA's Airport Operations System, bringing its operations into one real-time platform, SITA said in October 2025, adding that self-service bag drop, first deployed at the end of 2023, raised passenger satisfaction by 70%.
Passenger Terminal Today said the upgrade continues a 20-year partnership with SITA.
Air India said on 12 September 2025 that SITA's OptiFlight climb module and SITA eWAS were active across the Air India Airbus A320 and Air India Express Boeing 737 fleets, with widebodies to follow.
It expected annual savings of about 11,100 tonnes of fuel and 35,000 tonnes of CO2.
Airports of Thailand's automated biometric identification system came into use for domestic passengers at six airports including Don Mueang from 1 November 2024, Airport Technology reported on 4 November 2024.
SITA supplied self-service kiosks under AOT's plan for 1,200 biometric touchpoints.
Azul is using SITA Mission Watch flight tracking, the first airline in the Americas to do so, and in October 2023 entered a trial of SITA eWAS and SITA OptiClimb, SITA said on 24 October 2023.
Hamad International Airport launched a digital twin with SITA in June 2022, a real-time 3D view of the airport that combines data analytics and artificial intelligence to manage stand conflicts, respond to alerts and monitor critical assets.
It was named Smart Solution of the Year at the Qatar IT Business Awards.
SITA announced on 18 November 2021 that Frankfurt Airport had selected 87 of its TS6 kiosks for Terminals 1 and 2, running on the SITA Flex common-use platform, together with SITA's baggage messaging service. SITA called it its largest implementation in Europe and expected installation to finish later that year.
The kiosks let passengers check in and print bag tags for later self-service bag drop. SITA describes them as biometric-enabled, but the sources do not show biometric identification in use at Frankfurt's kiosks.
Dr Pierre-Dominique Prümm, Fraport's executive director for aviation and infrastructure, was quoted in the release on offering passengers innovative, safer and smarter ways to travel. No later source confirms that installation was completed, so the record rests on the 2021 announcement, and neither company describes the kiosks as AI.
SITA completed the installation of self-service check-in and bag-drop facilities for Ethiopian Airlines at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, Passenger Terminal Today reported on 27 July 2021. The Smart Path Drop & Fly units sit in the new extension of the check-in area, and international passengers can go directly to them to check in their bags, which the report said cuts congestion and contact with ground agents.
SITA's president for the Middle East and Africa, Hani El-Assaad, called Bole "one of the first airports in Africa" to implement Smart Path bag drop, with Ethiopian as the first adopter. In a release dated 2 August 2021 and carried by Pan African Visions, SITA said the installation was future-proofing the airport to accommodate biometrics quickly.
This is self-service check-in and bag-drop equipment, and neither source describes a prediction or learning function. Usage figures, the number of units and any later biometric upgrade at the bag drop had not been published as of 16 October 2026.
SITA installed 35 TS6 common-use self-service check-in kiosks at Prague Airport on its cloud-based SITA Flex platform, with a touchless mobile option, Passenger Terminal Today reported on 6 July 2021. Airport Technology reported the next day that the kiosks can be upgraded for biometric capture, bag drop and boarding; they are biometric-ready, not biometric today.
San Francisco International and United Airlines trialled SITA Smart Path biometric processing for domestic travellers, SFO announced on 7 April 2021. Security screening was left out of the trial, according to the airport and Biometric Update.
Beijing Capital International Airport installed SITA's Smart Path biometric system for international passengers, AviTrader reported on 20 August 2020 and Airport Technology the following day. SITA said the deployment included more than 600 biometric checkpoints, including 250 automatic gate lanes, 80 kiosks and 30 self bag-drop stations.
The system was activated at manual and self-service check-in, bag drop, restricted access, security and boarding, and it also supports contactless duty-free payments, according to the reports. The scale figures are SITA's own.
AirAsia said on 30 January 2020 that it was the first airline in Asia to implement OptiClimb, which uses historical flight data and artificial intelligence to recommend climb profiles and could save up to 3% of climb fuel.
In January 2016 Naples installed SITA iBorders BorderAutomation ABC gates for holders of EU biometric passports, using face matching with fingerprint as an extra check, Airport Technology reported on 19 January 2016.
The Jamaica Gleaner reported on 5 January 2024 that six e-gates at Sangster had come on stream the previous week.
The airport has had PICA's SITA biometric passport-control kiosks since December 2014, and two more e-gates for Jamaican travellers were added in December 2024, according to the Jamaica Information Service.
Since December 2014 Norman Manley has had PICA's SITA biometric passport-control kiosks, part of 15 kiosks across Jamaica's two international airports, Kiosk Marketplace reported in December 2014.
