Air India: a customer assistant in service, flight-efficiency savings still projected

Air India's Maharaja assistant is an established generative-AI service. Its OptiFlight and weather deployment has a defined fleet scope, but the published fuel and emissions figures are expectations rather than completed savings.

Customer questions are frequent and unevenly distributed. Air India introduced Maharaja in 2023, reporting early volume across many topics and four languages.

Flight efficiency has a different operating horizon. In September 2025 Air India said SITA OptiFlight climb optimisation and eWAS weather tools were active on its A320 and Air India Express 737 fleets, with wider-body expansion still to come. The claimed annual fuel benefit is a forecast.

The work behind the evidence

01 / Deployed

Maharaja handles the airline's routine questions

The operational problem

A passenger needs an accurate answer about a booking or service, with escalation when the request cannot be safely resolved.

What the evidence reports

November 2023 reporting put Maharaja's cumulative handling above 500,000 enquiries after its March launch and said most of roughly 6,000 daily questions received rapid answers.

Operational significance

Volume establishes early adoption, not the correctness of an individual answer or the outcome of a difficult case.

Evidence still needed

The figures are historical, with no independently verified resolution quality or current operating rate.

02 / Deployed · limited scope

Optimising climb performance and access to weather

The operational problem

A flight crew and dispatcher need useful weather information and fuel-efficient operating guidance within safety constraints.

What the evidence reports

Air India's September 2025 release described OptiFlight climb and eWAS use on A320 and Air India Express 737 fleets, with expected annual savings of about 11,100 tonnes of fuel.

Operational significance

Fleet-level coverage is a concrete implementation statement from the airline.

Evidence still needed

The annual savings and emissions figures were projected, not verified results; the specific AI component of eWAS should not be assumed.

Editorial assessment

Air India has two recognisable tasks rather than one organisation-wide AI claim: serving customer enquiries and supporting flight efficiency.

The next editorial update should distinguish completed customer requests from simple responses, and measured fuel outcomes from launch projections.
