Ethiopian Airlines and NIDP memorandum on the Fayda digital ID as a domestic travel document · Reported · unverified
Ethiopian Airlines and Ethiopia's National ID Program (NIDP) signed a memorandum of understanding on 29 October 2024 to integrate their systems so that the Fayda digital ID can serve as a travel document on domestic flights, the Ethiopian News Agency reported. Ethiopian Monitor named the signatories as Group CEO Mesfin Tasew and NIDP Director Yodahe Arayasilasse, who signed at the airline's headquarters.
The airline said it is planning to introduce biometric passenger processing from booking up to boarding in partnership with NIDP. Ethiopian Monitor, citing NIDP data, put registrations in the Fayda system at more than 9.2 million at the time. Biometric Update added national context on 31 October 2024: Ethiopia has been working with ICAO to prepare a rollout of biometric passports, which sits outside the memorandum's domestic scope.
A memorandum is a statement of intent, not a delivery contract. As of 16 October 2026 no go-live date, technology supplier or passenger figure for the booking-to-boarding process had been published, and the record would move on an airline or NIDP notice that Fayda is accepted at domestic check-in or the gate.

Editorial assessment
Addis Ababa's bag-drop installation is a defined service. Ethiopian Airlines' intended Fayda identity integration is a separate proposition that still needs a dated go-live.
