Brussels Airport Operations Plan and passenger-flow forecasting

Brussels Airport · Airport Intelligence

Brussels Airport runs an Airport Operations Plan, a shared forecast covering the passenger journey from security and passport control to boarding, the baggage process, aircraft handling and access to the airport by road, public transport and parking. The airport says the AOP forecasts from six months to two days ahead and also gives real-time information on processes such as security screening and border control, so that waiting times can be cut on the day.

The plan came out of a consortium Brussels formed in 2017 with 11 other airport operators and two air traffic control providers, including skeyes, according to the airport's pressroom article of February 2024. The consortium received a European grant from September 2018, with Brussels as project leader, and the project was completed in late 2023; a follow-up project involves 18 airports, one air traffic controller and EUROCONTROL.

Passenger-flow forecasting at security came first. Chief operations officer Thomas Romig told International Airport Review in November 2025 that Brussels had used AI-based forecasting since 2017, predicting passenger volumes at security in intervals as short as five minutes to staff lanes, and that the system had recently been upgraded for real-time adjustments.

Brussels offers its AOP expertise to other airports through its subsidiary Airport Intelligence. It has not published cost or queue outcomes, and the machine-learning modules being added under AOP 2.0 are recorded separately.
