Smiths HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX CT cabin baggage scanner
Kerry Airport · Smiths Detection

Smiths Detection, of London, makes CT scanners and screening systems for airport checkpoints, hold baggage and cargo, with software that recognises threats automatically.
Founded in 1946 with 1,001 to 5,000 staff, it makes the HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX checkpoint scanner, CTX and HI-SCAN XCT hold-baggage systems, the iLane tray system and Checkpoint.Evoplus software. The register lists it as pending acquisition and has not verified the figures in its marketing.
London Heathrow (LHR) has completed its HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX rollout, Birmingham (BHX) runs a Smiths CT checkpoint and Jeju (CJU) uses AI target recognition on CT. Kuwait (KWI) contracted it for Terminal 2 hold-baggage screening.

Birmingham Airport · Smiths Detection
In May 2023 Birmingham Airport ordered Smiths Detection HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX CT scanners for its checkpoint.
London Gatwick · Smiths Detection
Gatwick said on 31 March 2025 that all 19 of its security lanes used CT scanners.
The scanners were phased in with Smiths Detection, the airport said on 20 December 2023.
London Heathrow · Smiths Detection
Passenger security lanes in all four Heathrow terminals have been replaced with CT scanners, Heathrow announced on 23 January 2026 at the close of a £1bn upgrade. Smiths Detection confirmed on 30 January 2026 that the scanner is its HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX. Heathrow calls itself the largest airport in the world to fully roll out next-generation CT security scanners, and Smiths makes the same claim.
Computed tomography builds a three-dimensional image of each bag instead of the flat views produced by conventional X-ray, and Smiths pairs that volumetric image with automatic threat recognition software intended to reduce manual bag checks. Smiths says the scanners meet ECAC's C3 standard, which it describes as the highest performance standard for explosives detection systems for cabin baggage. For passengers, Heathrow says liquids and electronics can stay in hand luggage, and Smiths specifies liquids of up to 2 litres.
Heathrow chose the equipment in March 2021. Smiths' announcement of that selection also covered iLane automatic tray-return systems, its Checkpoint.Evo plus lane-management software and a ten-year equipment service agreement.
With every terminal converted, the open questions concern performance. Lane throughput and alarm rates for the new lanes have not been published by either company.
Kuwait International Airport · Smiths Detection
Smiths Detection is to supply 70 HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX scanners for Kuwait International Airport's new Terminal 2, the company announced on 26 March 2021. They let passengers leave electronics and liquids in their bags.
The terminal, still under construction, is designed for 25 million passengers a year, Smiths Detection said. According to Arab Times, it must be ready by November 2026.
Jeju International · Smiths Detection
Jeju airport's smart security checkpoint uses Smiths HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX CT with AI-based automated target recognition.
Computed Tomography (CT) X-ray scanner for checkpoint cabin baggage screening. Gantry rotates at constant speed while baggage passes on a conveyor belt; hundreds of X-ray projections are reconstructed into high-resolution volumetric 3D images in real time.
Conventional 2D X-ray checkpoint systems require passengers to remove laptops, liquids, and gels from hand baggage, creating queues and increasing tray handling. The HI-SCAN 6040 CTiX provides volumetric CT imaging and automatic explosive detection that meets ECAC EDS CB C3 and TSA CPSS standards, removing the need to take those items out of bags and reducing manual alarm resolution.
AI-based Automated Prohibited Items Detection System (APIDS) for aviation checkpoint screening.
Airport checkpoints using CT scanners require operators to manually review every 3D bag image, creating a productivity ceiling as traffic grows. iCMORE APIDS automates the detection of defined prohibited objects so operators only intervene when the algorithm flags an alarm, reducing routine image review and increasing throughput.
SecurePort-IRBS (International Remote Baggage Screening) is Smiths Detection's system enabling fully automated cross-border baggage screening.
High-speed computed tomography explosives detection system (EDS) for checked baggage and cargo screening. Uses a proprietary single X-ray source with dual-energy design to produce high-resolution 3D images and 2D/3D organic/inorganic material discrimination.
Airports screening checked baggage for explosives require high-throughput automated EDS that integrates into conveyor-based baggage handling systems. The CTX 9800 DSi provides TSA-certified and ECAC Standard 3-approved EDS capability with single-conveyor design to reduce bag slippage, and Level-1 and Level-2 decision output before a bag exits the machine.
Compact single X-ray source CT explosives detection system (EDS) for checked baggage and cargo screening in space- or weight-restricted environments. Suitable for smaller airports and standalone operations.
Smaller airports with limited floor space or infrastructure budgets require a compact ECAC Standard 3-approved EDS that can screen checked baggage including oversized items without requiring the footprint of high-throughput inline systems.
Next-generation high-speed explosives detection system (EDS) for hold baggage and air cargo screening. Features a dual-view dual-energy X-ray line scanner combined with full 3D volumetric CT imaging and reconstruction.
Major hub airports operating fully automated inline baggage handling systems require an EDS that combines high-speed throughput, a large tunnel for oversized bags, and ECAC/TSA compliance. The HI-SCAN 10080 XCT addresses this with dual-view CT imaging that reduces false alarms and can operate at 0.5 m/s belt speed in-line.
Automated modular tray return system for airport checkpoint screening lanes. Provides a motorised, continuous supply of trays to the divestment area, automatic bag diversion for secondary inspection, and reclaim space management at the exit of the checkpoint.
Manual tray handling at airport security checkpoints creates operational bottlenecks, increases labour requirements, and reduces passenger throughput. iLane.evo removes the need for manual tray sorting, loading, and return, delivering a steady flow of trays and enabling checkpoint operators to focus on image assessment.
Software platform for checkpoint performance management, remote image review, and operational analytics. Collects and analyses data from all systems, sensors, and components across an entire screening area.
Airport security checkpoints generate operational data across multiple lanes and systems that is difficult to monitor in real time. Checkpoint.Evoplus centralises this data to support performance optimisation, enables remote screening where specialist analysts review images away from the checkpoint floor, and provides KPI tracking for management and regulatory reporting.
Portable desktop explosives and narcotics trace detector using non-radioactive Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS). Detects and identifies trace amounts of a wide range of military, commercial, and homemade explosives and common controlled narcotics including synthetic fentanyl opioids.
Airport checkpoint and cargo operators require a portable, sensitive trace detection capability for secondary screening of passengers, hand baggage, and cargo. The IONSCAN 600 provides rapid analysis under 8 seconds without requiring a radioactive ionisation source, removing the need for nuclear regulatory licensing.
Dual-view X-ray inspection system for high-throughput screening of oversized baggage, break-bulk freight, and air cargo. Features two 160 kV X-ray generators providing simultaneous horizontal and vertical imaging in a single conveyor pass.
Air cargo hubs, airports, and customs facilities screening oversized baggage and dense break-bulk freight require a scanner with a large tunnel, high conveyor weight capacity, and comprehensive dual-angle imaging in a single pass to maintain throughput without requeuing items.
