E-gates for border clearance at Sofia Airport
In undated testimony published by the Center for Immigration Studies, Sofia Airport was said to have installed automated border clearance using e-passports and facial recognition, open to European and Swiss travellers over 18 and processing each passenger in seven to ten seconds.
Round Trip Bulgaria, an airport guide, said on 3 April 2026 that e-gates were available at Terminal 2 for EU, EEA and Swiss holders of biometric passports, while non-EU travellers used staffed booths. This is reported and has not been verified.
