Glasgow: a passenger assistant in use, a security detector on trial

Glasgow's QR-accessed digital assistant has moved beyond an initial experiment. A separate AI baggage-threat detection programme was proposed for the airport's security checkpoints, where published results are still missing.

The picture at Glasgow Airport

Passenger questions and security images demand different tests

At the terminal, a traveller may want a simple answer about facilities or onward travel. At security, the operator needs to detect a prohibited object without missing a threat or overwhelming officers with false alarms. Glasgow's AI projects sit at these two very different points.

Hello Lamp Post's airport assistant followed work with Connected Places Catapult and was subsequently extended across the AGS airport group. A trial of the Pangiam and Google Cloud-supported Project DARTMOUTH baggage detection capability was separately announced.

We know more about the assistant's rollout than its long-term resolution performance. The security programme is still recorded as a trial rather than a validated operational system.

Help without finding a staffed desk

The operational problem

Passengers often have short, practical questions that do not warrant standing in a service queue.

What the sources report

Airport Technology described Glasgow's Hello Lamp Post assistant in December 2024, reached via QR codes. A connected trial reported 86% satisfaction; subsequent Connected Places Catapult material describes a wider multi-year contract across Glasgow, Aberdeen and Southampton.

Why it matters

It is a repeatable airport information service with a reported expansion, though a satisfaction measure alone does not show accurate resolution of difficult enquiries.

What remains unproven

The current record lacks comparable live completion rates, escalation figures and the sampling basis behind the reported trial satisfaction.

Could AI read a bag without replacing the officer?

The operational problem

Security staff must spot prohibited items consistently while maintaining checkpoint throughput.

What the sources report

Ferrovial announced an AGS airport trial of Project DARTMOUTH, using AI and machine learning with Pangiam and Google Cloud to assist threat detection in baggage images.

Why it matters

Security-image assistance is consequential because poor detection and excessive false alerts have direct operational effects.

What remains unproven

The register does not establish regulatory authorisation for permanent use, detection accuracy or a measured Glasgow deployment outcome.

Conventional Border Force eGates are also tracked at Glasgow. Biometric processing and changes in passenger age eligibility are not evidence of this airport's AI detection performance.

The burden of proof is different at security

A chatbot can be judged by useful responses and transparent escalation. A threat detector requires controlled evidence of safety and reliability.

Those should remain distinct editorial stories until published results justify a closer comparison.
