Ningbo: AI at the customs image, not the check-in gate
Customs officers at Ningbo use assisted image review and remote checks for international travellers. The airport's facial security verification is older and less clearly documented today.

The decision belongs to customs
An international arrival passes through several kinds of checks. Ningbo's customs service says its system brings image review and remote inspection together, using algorithms to help staff assess baggage.
That is a different function from the airport's older face-recognition security gates and temporary digital boarding credentials. The latter support identity handling but provide little insight into present-day AI-assisted customs decisions.
The available government reports give processing figures, not a controlled comparison of the detection performance of the AI assistant.

The operational problem
Customs officers need to identify suspicious baggage without delaying every arriving passenger.
What the sources report
Ningbo Customs and local government reporting in 2024–25 describe centralised X-ray image review, an intelligent assistance algorithm and augmented-reality equipment. A local authority gives clearance times of under eight seconds per traveller.
Why it matters
The relevant test is detection quality alongside the inspection time, rather than the existence of another display screen.
What remains unproven
The reported clearance times do not isolate the algorithm's contribution or independently establish false-alert and detection rates.
Face-recognition security checks launched in 2018 and a 2019 temporary boarding ID are historical identity services. The terminal control platform is a conventional multi-module operating tool unless more specific AI evidence emerges.
Terminal collaborative decision and operations-control platform at Ningbo Lishe · Deployed · limited scope
Ningbo Lishe International Airport's terminal operations-control platform was selected by the China Civil Airports Association as a 2025 typical case in the operational-efficiency category, Zhejiang Airport Group said on 7 August 2025. The platform has seven modules covering daily inspection data, resource management, environment management, customer relations, construction management, operations and maintenance, and outsourcing management.
Staff view the terminal's overall running and the module data on integrated large screens, according to the group. The group has not published vendor names, go-live dates or performance figures.

Ningbo Lishe International Airport was among 203 Chinese airports where the Civil Aviation Administration of China's temporary boarding e-ID went live on 15 September 2019, Zhejiang Online reported on 12 September 2019. Passengers who forget their ID card apply through a WeChat mini-programme and pass a face check to get a QR-code certificate, which Ningbo accepts at check-in counters 16 and 22 and security lanes A and I, according to the report and Sohu/Ningbo Fabu on 15 September 2019.
Ningbo Lishe International Airport brought in a face-recognition security-check system on 5 September 2018, which compares a passenger's face with their ID document at the checkpoint, Zhejiang Online reported at the time. The paper said a check took about three seconds and that passengers with an electronic boarding pass needed to show no paper document.
These details come from the 2018 launch reports in Zhejiang Online and Toutiao. The airport has not published an update on how the system runs today.
Evidence supports a reported claim; it does not automatically establish a measured operating benefit.
The evidence still has to meet the inspection task
Ningbo has a defined AI-assisted customs use, but the most relevant measurement remains detection against a reliable comparator.
Its other digital services should not inflate a claim about the current customs system.
