Fiji Airways adopts AI camera monitoring to manage aircraft turnarounds

Fiji Airways agreed in April 2024 to use Assaia's TurnaroundControl, which uses computer vision on live video to track turnaround tasks and help the airline keep departures on time. The announcement described the plan; Fiji Airways has not confirmed where the system runs or published results.

Fiji Airways' documented AI work is a single supplier agreement, aimed at punctuality on the ground.

Assaia's system, also trialled by British Airways at Heathrow (LHR) in 2019, detects turnaround events in camera footage and compares them with the plan.

The work behind the evidence

01 / Reported · unverified

Computer vision on the turnaround

The operational problem

Delays during a turnaround are often only visible to staff on the stand, and the operations team learns of them when the departure slips.

What the evidence reports

Assaia said on 16 April 2024 that Fiji Airways had partnered with it to use TurnaroundControl, which applies computer vision event detection to help monitor, manage and optimise turnarounds, with live video for decisions as events unfold. Andre Viljoen, managing director and chief executive, said the airline's "operational team will be able to closely track and manage all turnarounds which we are responsible for".

Operational significance

Live visibility of every turnaround the airline is responsible for gives its operations team the chance to act before a delay reaches the schedule.

Evidence still needed

The announcement describes an intention. It does not name the airports, and Fiji Airways has not confirmed the system is live or published punctuality results.

Editorial assessment

Fiji Airways' documented AI is one ground operations agreement, focused on punctuality.

Confirmation of where TurnaroundControl runs, and any change in punctuality, would show whether the plan became practice.
