The picture at Murtala Muhammed International
The bag screen, not the future terminal
The most specific AI-labelled technology recorded at Lagos concerns baggage screening. Nigerian aviation and business reporting says FAAN installed Orion imaging scanners in April 2025.
More ambitious biometric and eGate plans were announced for the airport's redevelopment. Earlier talks over NEC facial recognition were also reported without a later contract or installation.
Neither the scanner's name nor an announcement of future equipment establishes effective threat detection. The operating evidence needs to show how staff use and validate the system.

The operational problem
Security officers need clear, reliable views of baggage contents while maintaining an acceptable screening rate.
What the sources report
BusinessDay and Aviation Metric reported in April 2025 that FAAN introduced AI-powered Orion baggage-screening machines at Murtala Muhammed International. Later Nigerian reporting described multiple 927DX and 928DX units.
Why it matters
The equipment is an operational security investment; whether its AI-labelled function assists detection meaningfully remains the substantive question.
What remains unprovenNo independent algorithm description, detection performance or screening-throughput comparison is established by the record.

What else is happening at Murtala Muhammed International?
A future facial-recognition and eGate programme remains reported but unverified, while NEC discussions from 2023 did not yield a documented installation. Both are retained as context, not featured outcomes.
Planned e-gates and biometric processing in the Murtala Muhammed International remodel · Reported · unverified
FAAN says the remodel of Murtala Muhammed International will introduce e-gates, biometric processing and upgraded screening, Passenger Terminal Today reported on 11 June 2026, after FAAN set out the plan on 29 May. At the 35th ACI-Africa conference in Abuja, FAAN's managing director outlined a facial-recognition and e-gate roadmap that will come soon, Aviation Metric reported on 30 September 2026. No contract has been announced.

NEC facial recognition talks for Lagos and Abuja airports, 2023 · Reported · unverified
Nigeria held talks in March 2023 on Japan-grant-funded NEC facial recognition that would be piloted first at the Lagos and Abuja airports, Biometric Update reported on 23 March 2023. No contract or installation has been reported.

Evidence supports a reported claim; it does not automatically establish a measured operating benefit.
Equipment counts do not measure security
Lagos has an identifiable security deployment to examine, without needing to borrow claims from future terminal plans.
The next useful evidence would describe the screening software's operating role and independently assessed performance.
