Tampa: stopping an overheight vehicle before the bridge

Tampa's Overwatch sensors identify trucks likely to strike terminal infrastructure. The airport has reported actual warning volumes, while related apron and passenger-flow uses remain less mature.

A very ordinary hazard with expensive consequences

An overheight vehicle approaching a terminal drive can cause damage and close a route used by thousands of passengers. This is a precise airport problem, and Tampa International has described a specific AI-assisted response.

Overwatch uses lidar observations to warn drivers before they reach constrained roadways. The airport has reported the number of overheight vehicles detected since launch. Sotereon and partners have also described tools for aircraft turnarounds and shuttle-lobby flows, but their operational maturity is different.

The sensible editorial approach is to lead with the working safety application, not the number of products carrying the Overwatch name.

The operational problem

A tall vehicle can approach a low-clearance terminal access route without the driver recognising the risk in time.

What the sources report

Tampa's airport newsroom said on 2 June 2026 that its Sotereon Overwatch system uses five lidar sensors and AI to warn of overheight vehicles. It reported detecting 18–20 vehicles per day since the 3 April launch.

Why it matters

The detection count establishes frequent operational use, though prevention is a different measure from detection.

What remains unproven

The airport has not published a verified reduction in bridge strikes, false alarms or response times.

The operational problem

Turnaround and shuttle-lobby operations also depend on knowing what is moving and where.

What the sources report

ePlane AI described Sotereon's Underwing Overwatch and Shuttle Lobby concepts in February 2026, using live lidar information for aircraft and passenger movement.

Why it matters

These pilots show the possibility of extending the sensing capability to other operational contexts.

What remains unproven

There is no established live scale or measured benefit for either adjacent tool.

What else is happening at Tampa International?

The earlier Aeva and Sotereon lidar hardware record concerns initial sensor deployment for the same broader Overwatch programme. It adds supplier history rather than a third independent featured result.

Aeva 4D LiDAR with Sotereon.AI Overwatch, deployment begun at Tampa International · Deployed · limited scope

Aeva said on 23 July 2025 that Sotereon.AI had begun deploying Aeva 4D LiDAR sensors at Tampa International Airport with its Overwatch platform, with the first sensors installed.

Aeva listed infrastructure, passenger-safety and tarmac monitoring as possible uses.

A warning is valuable if a collision is avoided

Tampa gives Aerostack a useful test case because the hazard is so tangible.

The next evidence should distinguish daily detections from actual prevented incidents and from false alerts that drivers may learn to ignore.
