Kansai's autonomous baggage towing moves from concept toward airside work

Kansai has tested AI-managed terminal cooling and reported Level-4 autonomous baggage towing. These are separate tasks with different performance measures.

The operating picture

An autonomous tug has to share the apron with aircraft servicing vehicles, while terminal cooling faces occupancy and temperature variation.

A 2025 TractEasy announcement described EZTow working at Terminal 2; Mainichi had reported an AI air-conditioning test in 2021.

The later towing milestone is operationally more concrete than treating both as one generic airport AI initiative.

The operational problem

Baggage towing needs reliable navigation and safe handover when automation cannot proceed.

What the sources report

TractEasy reported Level-4 EZTow operations on the Kansai Terminal 2 ramp in April 2025.

Why it matters

The setting permits direct observation of routes and human intervention.

What remains unproven

The source is supplier-led, and there is no independent fleet utilisation, safety or cost result.

Editorial assessment

Kansai's airside autonomy milestone is worth watching independently of its older cooling experiment. Performance should be described in terms of completed towing tasks and safety exceptions.
