Dallas tested AI-labelled observation towers before its newer biometric gates

Dallas Love Field experimented with SCOT security towers in 2022. Its later CLEAR identity gates are a separate service, not a measure of the towers' success.

The operating picture

An automated warning tower is intended to recognise and respond to behaviour near busy passenger areas. In this case the pilot was visible to every passenger walking past a tower. That visibility did not answer the central question. Did the security team receive alerts it trusted enough to change its response?

It was a visible trial. A security tower near a baggage belt could recognise movement and issue warnings, but usefulness depends on the kind of alert it makes and how a trained employee responds. The reports do not supply that sequence.

Dallas Morning News reported two towers under test near baggage claim and security in April 2022. The observation towers made noise and issued warnings as part of their design. An effective test would have measured whether the security team received useful alerts, not merely whether people noticed the towers.

The devices were an experiment; later installation of biometric gates does not confirm their continuation.

The evidence behind the application

The operational problem

Security officers need trustworthy alerts without generating false alarms around ordinary passenger activity.

What the sources report

Reporting described towers offering automated warnings and contact with security staff.

Why it matters

A time- and place-bound test could reveal the usefulness of behaviour detection.

What remains unproven

There is no verified pilot conclusion, detection accuracy, deployment continuation or measured intervention benefit.

CLEAR expedited identity lanes at Dallas Love Field, launched 2017 · Deployed · limited scope

CLEAR launched expedited identity lanes at Dallas Love Field in July 2017, the City of Dallas announced on 24 July 2017. Enrolled members confirm their identity with a fingerprint or eye scan, which lets them skip the boarding-pass and ID check and go straight to TSA physical screening.

CLEAR eGates at Dallas Love Field security checkpoints, from October 2025 · Deployed · limited scope

Dallas Love Field became the first airport in Texas to install CLEAR's biometric eGates, NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth reported on 30 October 2025. The eGates match a CLEAR Plus member's face against their ID and boarding pass, and CLEAR says members can reach physical screening in as little as five seconds.

This is a TSA public-private partnership, and TSA still controls gate access, GovTech Insider reported, citing the Dallas Morning News.

The launch was timed ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Editorial assessment

Dallas's observation towers belong to the history of airport security experiments. Without a concluding evaluation, a subsequent biometric launch cannot be used to claim the tower trial succeeded.
