Los Angeles: ground coordination on one side, border processing on the other

LAX has documented AI-assisted ground operations with a named handler, alongside federal biometric passenger processing at specified terminals. The two functions belong to different organisations and should not be presented as an airport-wide AI system.

A giant airport does not have one technology story

A technology announced at Los Angeles International may serve only one ground handler, terminal or federal agency. The distinction is essential at an airport with such varied operations.

Moonware launched its HALO system with Aerocharter USA in March 2024, using AI and real-time data analytics to coordinate work on the ground. At the Tom Bradley International Terminal and Terminal 7, US Customs and Border Protection has introduced Enhanced Passenger Processing. Its biometric identity process is separate from HALO.

The register contains genuine deployments, but very different kinds of evidence. Moonware describes a handler-specific platform without independent operating results; federal sources confirm biometric processing at named terminals while quoting broader rather than strictly LAX-specific benefits.

The operational problem

Aircraft servicing involves several vehicle and crew movements that need to be sequenced around a tight stand schedule.

What the sources report

Moonware said HALO launched at LAX in March 2024 through Aerocharter USA, a ground-handling business. The company describes its platform as using AI and real-time operational information.

Why it matters

A handler-specific system is worth understanding because its performance depends on the tasks and aircraft it actually manages, not the airport's total traffic.

What remains unproven

Current aircraft coverage and measurable effects on delays or ground-team productivity have not been independently reported.

What else is happening at Los Angeles International?

LAX and CBP report biometric processing at Tom Bradley and Terminal 7. The often-quoted 25% wait-time reduction is a national CBP claim, not a demonstrated LAX-specific result. An older paperless-boarding pilot and a cancelled duplicate record should not imply full-airport AI coverage.

Los Angeles World Airports, US Customs and Border Protection, British Airways and Vision-Box began piloting biometric e-gate boarding at the Tom Bradley International Terminal in January 2018. LAWA said in its release of 18 January 2018 that LAX was the first location in the US to pilot paperless biometric boarding.

Arrivals have followed. CBP said on 14 August 2025 that Enhanced Passenger Processing, introduced in June, was fully operational at Tom Bradley and Terminal 7 by August, and it reports a 25% cut in wait times nationally.

BigBear.ai says its veriScan system supports the process at both terminals.

For scale, Tom Bradley handled about 10.4 million passengers in 2024, Airport Industry News reported on 18 August 2025.

Location makes a claim testable

A terminal-specific biometric service and an airline-handler ground platform require different measures and different accountable operators.

The next useful LAX AI story would put HALO's actual operating reach and results alongside that limited deployment claim.
