Shenyang applies automated image review in an express-mail customs centre

Shenyang's express-mail centre used CT equipment with smart image review from 2019. This is a cargo and customs inspection case, not a claim about passenger checkpoint AI.

Identity and operational scope

Express-mail shipments pose high throughput and inspection challenges distinct from passenger security. The express-mail facility handled more than 10,000 items daily, according to the article. That workload provides context for automated imaging. It is not a denominator for evaluating detection accuracy, nor a claimed increase caused by the AI software.

A parcel is not a passenger. The centre's technical challenge is to identify suspect consignments in a stream of express mail that cannot all receive the same level of manual attention. Proving that the system helps would require a sample of known detections and misses, which the news report does not supply.

Liaoning Daily described smart CT imaging as part of the customs processing workflow. The reported throughput applies to the centre handling parcels, which has many inspection processes. It cannot be converted into a measure of how often the smart image-review component detects contraband.

A reported volume of over 10,000 items a day concerns the wider centre, not proven algorithm detection accuracy.

The operational problem

Customs officers need to distinguish legitimate parcels from items requiring further review.

What the sources report

A September 2019 provincial account describes CT inspection assisted by smart image review.

Why it matters

The application has an identifiable task and institution.

What remains unproven

False detections, manual overrides and continued use have not been verified independently.

Editorial assessment

Shenyang shows an early application of smart image review in customs logistics. A stronger claim requires detection evaluation, not merely the centre's daily parcel throughput.
